Matt: Why weren't those interesting/useful notes carried over into the SRT notes? There it simply says, "This tartan was recorded prior to the launch of The Scottish Register of Tartans."
Were notes lost in some mass transfer of data from one registry to the other?

Good question. I have no idea, but you could ask the STR.
I always go to the STA International Tartan Index first when I need info on a tartan.

I just sent the SRT a query. I'll post the response or, at least, the thrust of it, though it may be a few days.
It would appear in general that the SRT is a work in progress. On their "Guidance" web page is the general statement, ...
"Where tartans have been incorporated from existing registers
The National Records of Scotland has worked with the Scottish Tartans Authority and the Scottish Tartans World Register to amalgamate their former databases into a single dataset for the Register.
It should be noted that the criteria for registration applied by these two individual organisations differed from each other and also from those applied by the official Register. Not all tartans recognised by one organisation were recognised by the other and vice versa. Notes or background information made available for pre-existing tartans may derive from a variety of external sources. Every effort is being made to check and validate this information, however it is acknowledged that inaccuracies or lack of clarity may still exist in some of the records. The National Records of Scotland will continue to work with its tartan industry partners over the coming years to improve this information."

Indeed, the SRT is a work in progress. I just received a response to my query - 3 days - not too shabby.
I won't reproduce the entire response, but the thrust of it is ...
"As you will appreciate, data on over 5000 tartans has been transferred to the new Register and checking this will be an ongoing process over the next few months.
We have updated the Rob Roy (film) entry. Please follow the link below to see the entry as it appears now on the Register:

Thank you for drawing this issue to our attention."

Whichever register you use there are always missing tartans, for example my own, despite sending the details to Brian Wilton, and indeed a sample of the tartan, doesn't appear to be on the STA listing.
I think it's worth checking both lists, just in case!

Paul,
Just to point out that there is a distinction between recording the tartan in the ITI and the same tartan actually appearing on the STA's web site. I'm sure that if you have sent the details in to the STA, including a woven sample, that Brian Wilton would have entered it into the official ITI. A quick email to him would confirm that.
However, getting the tartan included on the STA web site is an additional process, and I know the STA has numerous upgrades for the web site in the works - one of which would be the ability to add new tartans to the online version of the ITI much quicker!

Re: Rob Roy movie tartan
Since I already have a tank in this tartan, I'm not overly jealous (though I'll admit that I'm becoming quite partial to box pleats).

Very nice understated elegance to it.
