I've only been called once for jury service and asked to be excused.

The defense lawyer wasn't very impressed but the judge did smile before quite lenghtily rebuking the court clerk after I explained that my view would probably be somewhat biased as I was an expert witness for the prosecution! (I worked at a lab that did blood-alcohol testing for the police).

I wore a utilikilt one day to court that I was working a half day, my judge was retired and back as visiting judge, and we only had one short emergency hearing. I was going elsewhere in the afternoon, and had worn my utilikilt to work once prior when I was working in the hottest part of the building. One of the other judges raised a stink, so now it's no go territory.

The twenty or thirty times I have been drawn into court, other than my divorce and one small claims action, I had to go as an expert witness for the prosecution in child abuse cases (actually twice for the defense), so going kilted would not have been an option as an expert is expected to dress like an expert, not like Mel Gibson from Braveheart. Have not had to go for a few years, although I was on jury duty this time last year and was never even called for a jury selection, let alone a trial. One of the benefits of living in a relatively rural county just outside city limits. Previously used to regularly get excused as I was a physician and courts USED to not wish to create hardship situation, which denying medical care to my patients would have classified as, but not anymore.

Congradulations. I am a bit envious. Last summer I was called for jury duty, but had to postpone. I intentionally requested the week containing Tartan Day. Alas, I never left the jury-pool waiting room and the lot of us were dismissed before Tartan Day itself. So it never came to court literally. Glad your experience was good.
