New kilt + price difference.

My new Ross Hunting muted kilt arrived today and I went down to pick it up at the shoppe. Beautiful tartan with a delightful fit that makes me very happy. Here are a few pics of the kilt while hanging up. I'll be wearing it for the first time out on Saturday and will take some shots then.

What was a bit more amazing was the price. Not what I paid,which was $310. That is a HUGE amount for me and I had to save and sell stuff for ages to get it. But the folks at the place I bought it from accidentally attached the purchase order to the receipt of mine. I didn't notice till I got home and there it was. The place paid half that to the vendor from Scotland. Wow. That is a HUGE markup! I'm all for profits but this makes me glad I don't buy special made kilts like this often. Don't get me wrong,as I'm not complaining that they made that much. I love the kilt. But I was curious how much markup and margin is made on kilts. My other two Black Watch kilts are 8 yd and cost $45 with a very fine result although they are from Pakistan and not custom. This Ross was a 5 yd in wool. Big difference in them,yes.

I wonder what the usual amount is. Not asking for disclosure but just curious.

You got a good deal at $310 for a 5-yard kilt. Yes, it's unusual to include the receipt from the supplier. Check out any of our advertisers to see what their prices are, and compare your kilt to theirs.

I wonder if the vendor from Scotland's price was in British Pounds? that would be more like 240 USD. Either way, 310 bucks is pretty good for a 5 yard wool.

and don't forget to include the cost of importation, tarriffs and brokerage fees. I don't know about the US but here in Canada I believe the duty on a kilt would be 13% and then depending of the method of shipping anywhere from $10 to $60 in service/brokerage fees.

All tha being said, $310 seems really reasonable to me.

This is one reason I buy the fabric from a supplier in bulk at a low cost and then have the kilt made by my sweet highland seamstress Doreen at The Kiltmakers Apprentice. I usually buy ten yards of double width at a time. An eight yard in 13oz weight usually would average me about $400 USD out of pocket, where as kilt to the same specs by a vendor would cost around $700.

What can I say its the Scottish thrift in me!
