I like it, but I certainly wouldn't call that colour mahogany (if it's showing true on my computer). Mahogany is more a reddish brown colour and there what I'm seeing is a purple-ish red colour?

I agree. Minus the tooling and the closure, I like it. A simple button-snap closure would have been a far smarter option in my opinion. Also, the colour seems to be more of a oxblood/cordovan hue, versus mahogany. The patina is lovely. All the wee nuances of the leather, including the darker, "scratched" areas are quite nice.

I'll add a comment on the cigar box closure. I have one on a sporran made byDonnie atWyvern (see below) and I like the way it securely snaps shut. The hidden snap closures never seem to stay shut for me.

There's an interesting steam punk design on the same site --

I have a similar black sporran with a simpler tooling pattern and a twist style closure by the same maker that I forgot to post a review on. I think his leather work is very well done, and I like the tooling personally. The fact that the tooling goes all the way around the back where it will rarely be seen says something about the maker's attention to detail in my opinion.

Thanks everyone for the feedback , much appreciated !

The shape and leather color is what caught my eye . I completely understand both points of view regarding the closure and tooling .

The seller referred to the leather color as mahogany but it is probably more of an oxblood as Kyle suggested . I can understand the seller calling it that as I have dealt with mahogany wood finishes that can range from brown to reddish brown to oxblood .

I'm okay with the closure , but still a bit mixed on the tooling . Although , as Colin mentioned , it may not be all that pronounced when worn , close-up pics can tend to over emphasize things .

Regardless of the tooling or it's style , I agree with Jonathan in the fact that the seller / maker went to the extent of continuing the tooling to the back .

Again , thanks to all for the input !

    Cheers , Mike

I like it. Tooling, closure and all.

Given that mahogany/oxblood/reddish color (at least as it appears on my monitor) the strap would have to match, IMO.

I also know from experience that the maker will take on custom orders. While I'm not sure if he has ever done snap closures, I'm sure he could make a similar sporran without the tooling.

I have two sporrans with the same type of closure and I like it very much - secure, easy to use and I get quite a few positive comments on it from others. It's the 'new' traditional.

I'm seeing closures like that pop up everywhere. I like them personally. It reminds me of steam-punk but not in a garrish, obnoxious way. "New Traditional?" Let's give it 25 years and if it's still flying high then hand that man a Peets card for first prize!

I like the tooling, too. It's done tastefully and is of high quality.

The colour is FABULOUS! My next day sporran will probably be in the oxblood vein and every time I see one in oxblood it nudges me closer.

Lastly, the shape reminds me of a MacRostie sporran. Classic, timeless.

    Wear it with pride.
