My Nova Scotia Highlanders MacDonald tartan Regimental kilt is a 22oz one and it got pretty messed up after a long car ride, a gig, and an after party sitting on couches and playing the guitar. It also doesn't take well to being rolled and put in a duffel bag for transport the way a knife pleated kilt can in a pinch.
You can maintain them, I have and do, but they're certainly more work than the knife pleated variety in my opinion.
