    generalisation...

I agree with the previous poster: don't generalise all "traditional" kilts because you saw one bad egg. Since none of us saw it firsthand, we are really in no place to judge at all.

Considering all of the positive posts on this thread, I think it is safe to say that many of us own traditional kilts and are overall pleased with them and their makers. I know I certainly am pleased with mine. Don't get me wrong, I like the "cut" of Bear's kilts, and I'm sure some of the other "casual" folks turn out fine products, but I am a "bluff old traditionalist" at heart who likes my expensive tank.

    Cheers,

    T.

Absolutely. It might be quality Loccaran tartan, but that says nothing about the kiltmaker. It could have been sewn in the basement of the store by Freddy the Wino for all we know. There are great kiltmakers around and plenty of em.

I was not commenting on all tanks, just my first experience with a so called "Hand Made." It was disapointing. If I were disapointed by it, what of others who may only hold a passing interest? They would see it, look at the obvious flaws, wear it once, and never even think of it again. I want to see a real tank. What I saw today was obviously not it.

How many people went in for a kilt, say, to get married in, and got a POS like this one, and it soured them on the kilt experience? I know for a fact there is better, but I have educated my self on the issue at hand, where the average customer has not. Somebody, God forbid, might see this kilt and think all kilts are like this. Heck, if I can go in with a Philabeg and knock this sap's troosers off, just think if I were to go into his store with a real tank. When, and if, I ever have enough money to get something like that, I am on the first day I own it going to walk down to his shop and show him what the real thing looks like.

It sounds cliche, but it's all a form of trooser tyranny. Sell somebody a piss poor looking kilt and he will wear it once. That way you can sell more ball busting troosers that wear out in planned obsolescence and keep your self rolling in dough. Real kilt wearers need to represent, educate, and point out the real el-cheapo knockoffs.

I am hoping see a real tank some day.

My 9 yard hand sewn was made by Lochcarron. But as others have mentioned, we don't know who the actual kiltmaker was of the kilt you described. Actually I wouldn't mind seeing a photo of this kilt.

DrDouglass, I agree with you about those face sporrans, I wouldn't wear one for anything. I do know a fellow with a fox head sporran, and while foxes are bad news if they arrive in Tasmania (so far free of them) I still wouldn't want a dead one hanging over my kilt!

Aw Graham. Just think. When you sit down to dinner the head would stick up like it's assessing the food and ladies would be trying to pet it on the bus.

I have to say that the above represent the best uses I have ever heard for an animal head sporran. Bubba, you have an interesting mind.

We came across one of those badger sporrans at the highland games last year in Ligonier, PA. It scared the beejeesus out of the kids. Afterwards, I noticed that the Scottish Lion offers in their catalogue a selection of animal head sporrans for all of your accessorizing needs with the mention that they are suitable for day, semi, and formal occasions. Quite versatile. Who could ever have guessed that an animal's head could come in so handy to anyone other than the critter itself?!

Were I to sport an animal head sporran, I would insist on also tacking its tail to my backside. That should REALLY get some attention at the games.

I am really pleased that we, on this forum, have had the opportunity to be privy to the infromation that our "experts" have shared with us. When I order my "tank" you can bet that I will go over it with a fine toothed comb to ensure that everything is perfect and if not, it will be made right.

I don't think that I will be ordering this kilt off the internet as I want to be face-to-face with the person who is selling me a lifetime investment.

As for the full face sporran, no way!

Lochcarron has quite an interesting video clip on its website. It is worth a look anyway, and can be found at
