Is it possible to date an old surplus Black Watch kilt?
Over 60 years ago, my father purchased a surplus Black Watch kilt in Canada. It has become my "go to" kilt nowadays. It is incredibly heavy and comfortable. I would like to unearth some of its history if possible.
Unfortunately, one of the straps broke when I was putting it on recently, so it's getting repaired. I can't get any photos of it, but I can certainly describe it.
Unlike my other kilts, it has four narrow straps/buckles instead of three wide sets. The straps are tipped with what I imagine is nickel silver hardware. On the inside of the kilt is printed "C-L-R-R" along with a handwritten name "Wayman" and a number, which I neglected to write down.
Anyone know where I can start to find information on this kilt?
Thanks,
Dirk

because of CLRR description, I suppose this kilt from Calgary Highlanders ( a Battalion of Calgary regiment), but it should be not Black Watch kilt knife pleated kilt but A&SH pattern box-pleated kilt. Tartan is the same, Black Watch...
You can check easily..
Anyway more pictures would help...

Definitely Black Watch and I'm pretty sure it is knife pleated. I'll have my mother take some photos later in the week. Not that these are much help, but here it is from the side on a hanger and a photo of the underside of one of the buckles I took for someone else.

You could try emailing the Blackwatch of Canada with the name and number. They may be able to tell you when the soldier served which would give you an approx date. If that doesn't work you could try http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discove...-heritage.aspx
The 'Eathen in his idleness bows down to wood and stone,
'E don't obey no orders unless they is his own,
He keeps his side arms awful,
And he leaves them all about,
Until up comes the Regiment and kicks the 'Eathen out.

Ah, thank you! I can definitely get the service number from the inside of the kilt this evening. That could help a lot!
