I think he did an excellent job!
He says he will make more and his prices are very reasonable, so if you're interested PM me and I will get you in contact with him.

The handle is all done by me. I used some antler I bought at a knick knack shop for I think $3 and some ebony bits I had laying around the shop.
I'm very happy the way it turned out and I feel I could take this sgian dubh camping and not be lacking in the knife department
That does look like a nice blade. The finished photos look like you took a lot of material off to get an edge, especially the middle pic. Is that just a photo illusion thing?
What's the ballpark price for the blade?

I didn't take much material off the edge, it's just that Joe often leaves his blades unpolished ("rustic forge marks" as he calls them) to give it more of an old timey appearance. When I sharpened it, I just polished the forged finish off with my stone.

If memory serves, I think the blade was in the $30 range.
Atlanta cutlery sells their Indian made blades for $15, I think the extra money for a custom forged properly tempred and hardened blade with a convex edge made from the good 1095 carbon steel which takes and holds a hair popping edge is well worth it :-)

    Cool idea Nick, thanks.

My only Sgian Dhu is a mini USMC KayBar replica. Kathy Lare's husband at Kathy's Kilts makes them up. Not an actual knife, originally a letter opener, has an aluminum blade.

I like it since the handle sends the message, "Semper Fi."

    Aye, That's the one!

    Thanks Ron.

You mentioned that sheath on this forum earlier. I already have the letter opener and I had just e-mailed Kathy Lare about buying the sheath to go with it. I mentioned that I would like to see what it will look like and she said she would get a picture to me somehow. And all of a sudden, there it is! What a coincidence! Did she put you up to that?

Crack me up...nope, just a coincidence I guess. Just got home from the Mesa, AZ Highland Games and saw the thread. Think her husband is the one who makes up the sheaths.

    Love the mini-Kabar, Ron!

Found out something about carrying the other day. I've said before that I was informed by the Assistant D.A. that a sgian is a concealed weapon in MI. Turns out he was pulling my leg. He just told me it really isn't a concealed weapon as long as it's visible, and in fact you can carry any size knife as long as it's visible. So I guess I'm going to go ahead and build that day sgian I've been wanting.

Once again, us Aussies have different rules about knives in public. As I understand it, we're not permitted to carry knives, concealed or otherwise. Not in a pouch on the belt, not in your pocket, and not in a bag. If found, you'll be arrested and charged with possession of a lethal weapon.
Which makes carrying a sgain dhub in your sock illegal...dammit.

And I like knives.. they can be such a thing of beauty.

How do the laws stand in other countries, folks?

    cheers
