Derek,
A cap might go well with a Utilikilt, but not wth your tartan. There are so many better real hats to choose from than the ubiquitous sporting cap. Something with a large brim all around for bright sun and light complexion.
Keep the shades!

I LIVE in driving caps/newsboy caps, all the time, kilted or non-kilted.

Me, I don't want to hardboil this egg of mine and a hat is the number one cure for baldness.
Let's see, if part of our kilt reason is practicality then why are we concerned with sunglasses and hats on bright sunny days?
You don't look out of place or posing. You look like you're going for a walk on a sunny day. Now, if it was night time, then I would assume you were Bono.
I wore a black Outback hat frequently until I saw a photo of myself and I didn't like it with most of my outfits. I got a hemp Outback Safari hat that goes better. However, there are times I wear the black one.
I keep getting gifts of ballcaps but being higher up the evolutionary scale, they don't sit on my head, so I avoid them.

Just add a riding crop and a cigar... then you might look more dangerous.

When it is really sunny, I like to have a hat -- as seen on my atavar.
I think it looks good, and it usually gets more attention than my kilts, as it happens.
But I'd never wear a baseball cap.
Nor boots, either, to tell the truth.
Am I odd?

Your statement reminds me of a picture a friend sent.
