The mention of the Tartan Army reminds me to ask: does anyone know if there are off the rack 5 yard kilts in the Tartan Army tartan available from any dealer? It's not a half bad tartan and I wondered if this might be the case.

The Tartan Army kilts can found here: http://scottishkilts.net/products/ca...t_package.html
I've seen other places selling just the kilt, but I cant remember where. If I find one of them I'll post it.

Coming from Inverness myself that is the type of thing most tourists think about Inverness. Lots of deer, castles and kilt wearing men because its in the highlands etc.
In Scotland (at least when I lived there) most men wore kilts for formal events only and, due to the price, never really for casual wear.
Can't say I've ever really caught onto UK's which is most likely due to my fathers influence (he's a traditionilist who disdains PVC, acrylic or cheap impersonations of what he calls 'proper' kilts.)
On a side note...have any of the American members of this site ever wondered about wearing a tartan from a different clan? The Stewart tartans were created for the English to wear (or allowed to wear) but as far as I know, in the old days, you weren't allowed to wear the tartan of another clan unless you were of that clan.
Clearly that no longer applies but that's probably partily the reason that the 'grouchy' old Scottish women I've read about in some posts start being all grouchy.

Master Boid,
I thought you were from Kilmarnock.
The thing that always puzzled me about Inverness was how could the the capital of the Highlands be at sea level.
Have you worn your kilt around Plymouth at all yet? I am sure that my fellow Plymothians would be very friendly. A good place to wear a kilt casually near Plymouth would be while hiking across Dartmoor. I know; I have done it myself.

We did a 10 day tour with our old folk rock band many years ago and the only kilt we saw the whole time was in Inverness, worn by an elderly gentleman who came into the bank where I was banking some of our 'ard 'urned and merchandise cash at the time. If we had'nt banked most of our takings by the way, it would have been spent on beer and the likes.

At Leuchars Air Show on Saturday I only spotted one kilt worn casually though there were plenty of kilted pipe band players; yet when I returned to Hawick late at night and went into town for a take away meal I spotted three separate kilted gentlemen; proof if any were needed that kilts are slowly becoming more common; a few years ago walking along the main street here kilted on a Saturday night would have attracted unwanted comments from young drunks.

Hi AA,
Kinloch Anderson of Leith, Edinburgh had their 4yd Breacan available in the Tartan Army tartan - it was my first purchase from them, back in 1998. However, I've just popped back to their website to check and find that they no longer list it among the tartans currently available in the Breacan! This strikes me as being odd as they created this inexpensive kilt for "wear to the game" - they also designed the Tartan Army tartan!
Anyway, here is a link to the relevant part of their site:

And here's an old photo (!) of me wearing my Tartan Army Breacan:

Sorry, I cannot help you beyond this.
