That would work well for some people don't you think? Just trying to make sure the little guy gets his fair share of kilts. Any kilt is better than no kilt.

I just transfer from my checking to my savings. That worked to keep a happy sum in there for a few months. I bought a bunch of kilts, and some computer parts...so that fund is greatly reduced, but I plan to build it back up again. It wouldn't take too long, as I can tell myself "no" often enough. I do dread the upcoming holiday season though... that always taps me out.

I like the deposit/pay of balance payment style... not only does it show some flexibility from the maker, and understanding that people aren't made of money, but it shows some trust in your clients. It softens the sting of "OMG, I'm dumping $400 on a kilt!?" not that I am complaining mind you, tartan wool is expensive, and made by hand should definitely worth the wait time, and the money. It does provide some level of security to the maker too... if someone is willing to plunk down a fair chunk of cash for a deposit, they are more likely to return to finish the deal. Overall, a fair system. I think that there are a number of people who use this method. Matt does, Neokilt does, Kathy does (although I have yet to pursue one of her products), USA kilts can apparently work with someone in regards to the higher end stuff, O'Neille seems to do a 50-50 as well. It seems to work well. Whenever you're dealing with a handmade piece, I think it's going to be "pay and wait", just how much you pay is up to the maker.

For those of you thinking that your credit card will protect you against a bad merchant, please remember that with most cards you must dispute a charge within 60 days of it appearing on your statement. Since kilts can take months and months to make, it is most likely that you would only find out that there is a problem long after your dispute rights have expired.

I do remember seeing one kilt company on line (Great Scot Shop) which offers a payment plan for kilt purchases. Here's a quote from their site:
Our easy payment plan requires a $75.00 deposit and $54.00 payments for six months. We accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express. Please allow eight to twelve weeks for delivery. Your Kilt will be shipped directly to you whether or not your payments are complete.

To take advantage of this offer, simply check "easy payment plan" on your order. Your order will show the full price of the kilt, but your card will only be charged the $75.00 deposit.
I've never ordered anything from the company so I've no idea of their reputation or their quality, but I do remember being struck by their payment plan offer when I was first looking into a kilt purchase.

    Their site is at http://www.greatscotshop.com

Has anyone had any dealings with them?

I have not had any dealings with them. All of their illustrations are of Lochcarron merchandise. If they are offering Lochcarron Kilts, you can rest assured they are top quality kilts. Lochcarron's Kilt delivery is 8 to 12 weeks, but they are worth the wait.
