tartan question
I was wondering: I have an ancestor that was from the Royal Stewart branch of Clan Stewart. I know that you can buy the royal stewart tartan, but what is the thing with the Stewart Black Modern tartan?
Can a member of royal stewart wear a stewart black modern tartan, or would they have to wear the Royal Stewart tartan. Just curious? Is there any connection between the royal stewart tartan and the stewart black tartan?
I just don't want to wear the wrong tartan.
I like the stewart black tartan a little more than the Royal stewart tartan
Please let me know your thoughts on this

Your about to get an entire chourus of "wear the tartan you like!"
"A veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

BTW, I am a Kelly and our family Tartan goes to the MacDonald clan so I do have my tank in Modern MacDonald. I also wear a Black Stewart and Black Watch that I purchased from SWK. I have absolutely no connections to those tartans but I have no problem wearing them and nobody questions me about it. Go with your gut.

The Royalty question is moot. Unless you happen to have a real title, it doesn't matter. Besides royalty wears any darn thing they please. I have the blood of a Danish king in my family, not to mention others, but in the general scheme of royalty, I am just another American. We have no claim to those titles anymore, as they see it. So, that said, Wear what you like.

As far as I know, and my mom is a Stewart, you can wear the Royal, the Black, the Dress, the Hunting etc. they are all from the same clan. Anyway if you like it go ahead and wear it, although I do understand wanting to have a connection to the tartan.

Would you care to elaborate on what you mean by "Royal Stewart Branch"?
There are Stewarts of Appin, Ardshiel, Bute and Galloway, among others. "Royal Stewart" is a tartan traditionally associated with the British Royal House, which does have some Stewarts in their bloodline (please no comments about the Windsor pedigree, please.)

Todd

As far as I know only one Stewart (Stuart) branch still has an acknowledged Chief - the Appin one I think.
But he isn't listed on http://www.rampantscotland.com/know/...clanchiefs.htm whilst the Queen is but as "Royal House" which indicates that this is considered a clan in its own right.

On the Standing Council of Scottish Chief's web site lists only one Stuart/Stewart as a member:
Stuart of Bute: THE MOST HON THE MARQUESS OF BUTE
