My kilt wearing activities actually only started a few months ago, but I now wish I'd adopted them much sooner in life. I've no ancestry that I know of to give me a reason for donning a kilt. I just enjoy their comfort for outdoor activities like hiking.
A few years ago I started to learn the accordion (I'm already a keyboard player of some 50 odd years). So now the kilt goes well with my attempts at Scottish reels and jigs when I entertain friends. I always felt something was missing!
Living within earshot of the practice location for the North Devon Pipers, yesterday evening I was sat in my back garden with a chilled can of beer listening to their great music wafting across the fields to me. Who needs CDs when you have the real thing on your doorstep!
An introductory photo was posted last night, taken during a ramble up in Wales a few weeks back. I hope to post more photos showing some of the fantastic scenery hereabouts - great kilt wearing country, yet so far I seem to be the only guy bold enough to sport one. What people think I've no idea - or much care for that matter . Maybe it'll start a trend here in Devon.
Welcome Sporranlegionaire from a fellow Devonian (although I am not currently living in Devon). That is a great looking kilt. What is the tartan? I suppose you are aware that there are Devon tartans, if you ever want one that represents where you live.
You say that you are the only guy who is bold enough to wear a kilt in Devon. That is strange, as my kiltmaker (in Scotland) told me that she has made more kilts for Devon men than for men from any other county in England. I wonder where they all are.
As for Devon being great kilt wearing country, I couldn’t agree more. I once walked a short stretch of the South West Coastal Footpath in Devon kilted, including the section from Combe Martin to Woody Bay via Great Hangman and Hunter’s Inn. Please do post some photos showing what great kilt wearing country North Devon is.

Hi Rob. The tartan is Scottish National. I've seen the Devon tartan as a length of it is displayed at the Hunter's Inn National Trust gift shop. Very attractive. I suppose I would be as much a rebel wearing it as the Scottish National, as I am not Scottish, nor was I born in Devon...I was created in South London.
You mentioned Combe Martin. I lived there during the fifties for about 7 years, and schooled at the local primary and Ilfracombe Grammar. Although I'm not a true Devonian, some of my earliest childhood memories are Devon-based, and I have therefore always treated this beautiful county as 'home'.

Welcome from Glasgow, Scotland.
I'm glad you've found just how comfortable kilts can be, with or without heritage.
Good on you!

You don't need any immediate ancestry. Men have worn MUG for a very long time.
