I think your reply was excellent. Light, but with just a hint of "I thought you were smarter than that , you moron" without actually saying it.
She'll either do the; "I was just kidding, didn't mean to offend" reply.
or the; "did your boyrfiend Brucie buy it for you for Xmas"?" stupidity.
Depending on her reply, you either continue or end communication.
(Some people certainly are free with such comments when not face to face. One of the joys of Internet comunnication I guess. To me, impoliteness is still impolitenesss).
The wonder to me is why are so many guys so insecure about themselves, that they get paranoid over what some other man is wearing?????

I like choices myself.
Oh I can and do come up with really great answers to dumb questions, unfortunetly it is about 1 minute too late to be funny.
I really like the counter question: "Are you ignorant or insulting?" You must admit though the "Grownups call this a kilt." is a classic.

Go ahead, "Poke the BEAR"
Go, have fun, don't work at, make it fun! Kilt them, for they know not, what they wear. Where am I now?

"A skirt? Dang, that's funny. Did you think that up all by yourself?"
