I am pleased that Americans are so well up on Dickens Alex!

Learning new words and phrases can only be beneficial so just as I try to adopt American idioms when visiting, so those visiting Scotland can benefit by learning a little Scots.

He came back with it a few moments later and said "I can't find no brolly but I found this gamp."
I have a friend who was originally Scots, but has lived here in the US for over 30 years. When his stepfather in Scotland died, he arranged the funeral over the phone with the undertaker. Since his stepfather had been in the Black Watch, he asked the undertaker to have a piper at the funeral. He flew to Scotland, and when he arrived at the church was handed the local news journal. He asked the undertaker what it was for, and was told, "It's yer piper."

Dialects in Scotland are so strong that, in Glasgow, it's a different speech a few blocks away.

I don't like the pretend Scots either but it's either accept or not. It's not my call.

One thing that's funny for me is our church "greeters". I've been asked to be one but as anybody raised in Scotland knows you are not going to put on a badge on that proclaims you are a "greeter". It's a little thing but I'm uncomfortable enough that I won't do it.

People always ask if I'm from Canada, but there's a definite difference between Canadian and Yooper accents. As has been said before, writing it doesn't really convey how it sounds. But I wouldn't want to type it all the time any more than you'd want to read it all the time.

If I can read it, no.. I wouldn't have a problem with it. I only care because I am unable to read the posts which are written in Scots. If you can't read the parent post of a thread, and can't read half of the replies, the thread can end up making little sense. Otherwise I wouldn't have bothered opening this thread. I thought the folks here were open to accommodation.

Other than eejit (I use idjit, myself), I would have to see those in context.
'specially since I don't think you mean "Be vewy quiet - I'm hunting wabbits."

I don't find Scots that difficult to read, on the whole. Maybe it's because I've lived and worked in places where I've had to understand different accents, dialects, and languages. Maybe it's because the regional dialect where I grew up is similar in flow, if not vocabulary, to Scots.
