Well then as chief of clan Destine sept Tishious beserkbishop et al are invited to join us. The official tartan in keeping with clan traditions can be anything that blends in, keep it low key .

You only want him low key so you get all the attention. It won't work Besides, Berserkbishop has two kilts, an open sporran, and a guitar, you'll be playing second fiddle on kilt night.

My earliest (provable) relative is Malcom MacLeod Rasey, whos father was Malcom MacLeod. Malcom Rasey came to America in the 1670's. I know that for sure. Anyone know why he would have changed his surname to Rasey? Ok all that leads me to this. Which tartan would be the most cost effective/ appropriate to wear?
I can give a link to the Rasey genealogy as far back as I know it if that would help some one. I appreciate any and all help since I am very ignorant in this field.
While I know that there are no kilt police, I too like to wear a tartan I have some connection to. I'd go with a MacLeod tartan as is readly available. I doubt that the MacGregors would adopted the name of Cunningham. It's far more likely the other way around. The Cunninghams and my clan, the Montgomerys are linked historicly through their long feud and were both from much farther south than the MacGregors.

this is where the connection with the MacGregors comes from, its not a great one, being internet, bit I dont know where else to look. My school libraries lack a good resource on Scottish heritage.
As for the "kilt" police, I am not really as interested in wearing things that I have the "right" to wear. I just am really curious about my heritage. I was a foster kid and anything that I can or could have gotten out of my parents is really long gone so I am forced to learn what I can with what I have. I find it all extremely fascinating: Heraldry, tartans, KILTS! Thank you for all the information provided and for the clan invites. I plan to someday put the loud McLeod and Black Stewart, (black stewart which I have no claim to) into my collection because I think they are gorgeous and stand out, I would just like to have a tank made in a tartan I am very sure about my roots to and can afford. I will order plenty of budget kilts in various tartans I am sure. The kilt obsession has taken root and spread to my brother .

MacLeod has several major tartans and the main 2 are known my several names:
MacLeod of Harris- Hunting MacLeod
MacLeod of Lewis- Dress MacLeod- Loud MacLeod
Originally, both were termed "MacLeod" and the bright yellow one was a Sobieski tartan, first found in the Vestiarium Scoticum
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Sobieski_Stuart
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vestiarium_Scoticum
To excuse having 2 tartans, they have gone through numerous naming variations.
MacGregor was proscribed (made illegal) and many MacGregors adopted other names. Common ones were Graham, Cunningham, and even Campbell.
Rob Roy MacGregor signed stuff for most of his life as Robert Campbell (sometimes adding MacGregor). In fact, he used his mother's maiden name of Campbell.

Berserk I to am just starting to learn about my Scottish heritage, I was adopted at a young age and grew up with a German surname, that is my step fathers. Who raised me and loved me as his own, I would never think of disrespecting him by changing my name but I am interested in where I come from. I have been able to assess from my mother that my biological father was a Dorward that is a sept of Clan Gordon, I also have Macleod on my mothers side way back as well as Welsh and Irish. Good luck in your quest, and wear what you want.
