I don't know. I prefer the "traditional look", The first kilt I ordered was a tank. Simply, it was the kilt I had been dreaming of for 4+ years. My Gang Colors in 16 oz wool! I have looked at the websites, and for me I like tartan, and I like the traditional styles of kilts. I would like a box pleated kilt or two, maybe a camo kilt in a traditional style, but the "Casual Kilts" are not for me.

Well, my "gate-keeper" kilt was a gift from my Grandmother when I was 15 or 16. Wish I could still wear it.
Non-traditional kilts didn't exist then - I'm 61 now. There was never a problem with me wearing the kilt, as all my family are Scots and fully comprehend kilts.
I do have one solid black kilt now, but it is cut traditional, and I haven't yet worn it much. Not more than a couple of minutes to check the fit, and to try it with a couple of shirts.
I still don't have a non-traditional, although I am thinking of having the Wiz make me one. The choices are the problem now. fabric, pockets-no pockets, color, style, etc etc etc..........

I am a boxing and MMA fan when I think gate keeper I think of a person good/tough enough to beat up on the guys that do not really deserve to be there but never good enough to beat the top guys for a title so he is just a "gatekeeper". For many they do nto want a traditional kilt, for non traditional UK is about the top you'll get. If you like more of a traditional style then yeah the black non tartan wear casual at your hips UK is the strong and common basic first style. Then a 13 to 16 oz 8 yard wool would be the unified Champ (I guess 13 oz would be like mayweather Jr and 16 oz would be your randy Cotour style). Still for me I'd call a sportkilt or one of those amazingly low priced still water's as a gatekeeper. I like the tartan look and both are casual basic easily seen as a kilt (AKA not confused with a ladies outfit) can be worn on the natural waist not just the hips and are cheap and easy to get. I'd say that SWK or sport kilt is the gatekeeper where it is bought and not disrespected but not the champ and a full traditional is the champ and the black UK is more like a top brawler where many like it better than a SK or SWK cause it is just plain tough for the everyday grind.
Also I will never bring up that I compaired kilts to fighters at the gyms cause I'd never hear the end of the "hey are these shorts just a gate keeper? Is sprawl the champ?" style comments

Having sold UK's for a couple years, I think I have a pretty good handle on this one. I probably put several hundred guys into their first kilts.
Part of it is price. The Original is less than half the price of the Workmans or Survival. It's not that much cheaper than a Mocker, but the mocker has a much 'skirtier' looks that doesn't bode well for a guy worried about how it will be perceived.
Black is a great color too. There isn't any risk of it being seen as feminine as a khaki kilt might be, and it goes with more stuff than the olive kilts or camo. Black is also the mandated color for Rock, Punk, Goth, Biker, or most of the other 'tough' guy groups.
In short, the black UK is a gatekeeper (more commonly known as 'gateway' here) because it screams "THIS IS NOT A SKIRT! IT'S A KILT AND I AM A TOUGH GUY!" and it does it at a decent price.
It's a great way for a guy to test the kilted waters and still have a salve for a risk averse ego.
(Not to be taken as a slam for guys who started on black kilts. It's perfectly reasonable when taking such a huge step outside the 'norm' to hedge your bets.)

As for me, I have yet to get any non-traditional kilts, except a black casual kilt. I am considering an x-kilt or utilikilt type in the future, maybe..... Price seems to be a factor for me. It seems to be a lot to pay for something that is basically the blue jeans of the kilting world.
But, I really like tartan, so my opinions are stilted, twisted, curved, and biased.
1. Yeah, first choice, starting point.
2. I had never thought of the "blue jeans" of the kilt world. I guess you'd be right about that. It's kinda represented like that...and the denim one definitely backs that up. lol.
3. stilted, twisted, curved? I found you have to be that way to wear kilts.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh, man, I never thought this would raise as much hilarity. I apologise to my american counter parts whole heartedly. I'll stick to a more universal speak. On that note,..
The reason I used the Gary Goodridge reference to the gate keeper, is that what he was dubbed in K-1 and Pride because the new guys had to fight him. It was the first example that came to mind.

I think Yaish hit the nail on the head. Just don't forget all that shiny metal on the Black UK Wormkan's.
The Black UK Workman's has a "Don't mess with me" look that was helpful in me feeling comfy being "different" in my early kilt wearing in a rural macho culture.

Gatekeeper: the kilt you have to get past in order to play kilted?
Gateway: the first taste that leads to an addiction to comfort, freedom, and perhaps style. I don't claim much style, but I'm a fan of comfort.
