Hey Ron, I am talking about exactly what you said. A t-shirt with the Hawaiian shirt open It is loose enough that it doesn't cause a problem with the heat... Half the problem, out in the desert, is keeping the direct sun off everything. It wouldn't be Scottish though, LOL! Hmmm, why wear the t-shirt...?
In my mind, and all I have to go by is what I see in my mind, the solid color kilt looks very good with a hawaiian shirt worn open and outside the kilt. A kakhi kilt conveys the essence of a grass skirt, perhaps. I think the black kilt would also work quite well... The Magnum P.I. look...

Ehh... I don't think I would do that...
I'm thinking more on the line of wearing a tartan driving cap, or a shirt with a tartan patern... But not mixing tartan.
RiverKilt had a thread on tartan jackets... I forget what they were called, but they had leather sleeves. I've also wondered if a solid color kilt could be fitted with a tartan apron. Kind of the reverse of the WW I canvas apron, but I have no idea how that could be done.

If we are talking about pre culloden era then it was long before clans had official clan tartans. What tartan you wore was more a function of what you could afford and what the local weavers could produce. Tartans made with imported dyes were a way to show off wealth.

Hmmm, perhaps a solid color kilt could be tartanned up with a fly plaid. I think that would be fine, and I think it would be great to have a tartan hat. The point would be to have a splash of tartan to give a "Scottish" flavor or essence to the outfit. You could have Japanese coligraphy on a kilt pin for that matter. The solid color is a blank slate...

I guess you could do things with a sporran too. I don't see why a sporran couldn't be fitted with a wool, tartan front, or something on that line, and used with a solid color kilt.
It seems like you could bring in a lot of variety with a solid color kilt through accessories.
Anyone up for trading their hose for Japanese tabi and sandals? LOL!

I need to get a black kilt, but that would work with the Hawaiian shirt and black sandals as well. I like the sandals that hav straps around the ankle too, but pair them with a t-shirt and solid color kilt.
Just to clarify, I'm thinking about very, very casual dress situations where one would wear shorts and sandals. Just replacing the shorts with a BK canvas kilt, for example. Although, I do have a pair of green shadow tartan shorts...

Insomnia is your friend
Ted, I'll post some photos of a few of my favorite plaid shirts with solid kilt combos in the next handful of messages. The clothes were just laid out on the kitchen counter, and no attempt was made to style the photos.
Regards,
Rex.
