The thing is? I'm a nurse. And there's a nursing shortage. Somewhere in any moderately sized town is someone who's going to hire me, even if I show up wearing clown shoes.

That might be true, but I'll bet you will have more choices of where to work if you show up without the clown shoes. I'm not sure I would want to work for the company that can't afford to be picky about who they hire.

I don't. Done it about three times in my life. Once, I did get the job, but that was because I was applying @ Utilikilts. The other two times, I got passed over. I am already different enough that I don't need to introduce kilts into the equation. Got fairly long hair, and I'm overweight, so I feel like it's better to be dishonest about my appearance, and get employment. If I get the job and, after a week or so of doing good work for them, I'll ask. Otherwise, I'll keep mum about it, and keep the kilts for off-the-job situations.
When it comes to my freelance computer support and photography businesses, I will wear what I want.

I voted yes. However I would only wear the kilt if I felt it was not going to be an automatic disqualifier. I would have to research a bit. Does the employer have an Equal Opportunity policy? What is the normal dress worn by employees? Is this a company that embraces individuality and diversity?
So, I suppose my answer is actually yes and no, depending on the situation.

I have. I got offered the job. I was told by the interviewer that I was the best dressed person to apply for the job. She also told me that if I had the self respect and confidence to dress that way in a high stress situation, that I was deffinately a person she wanted in her workplace. She couldn't my current employer for compensation, though, so I had to pass.

Good luck with your interview.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I did not, and have not. However, I mentioned in all my interviews that I will sometimes wear a kilt to work. Since the overwhelming number of job interviews I got in my last go'round were here at Stanford, and since I've been at Stanford for a long time, I knew that it wasn't likely to be much of an issue.

I wore my kilt for an interview for a fire department. Actually, there were two interviews. I was kilted to the first, but was whispered in my ear I might want to wear something different to the Chiefs interview. Still, the chief herd I wore my kilt to the first interview and I was still hired.
