It sounds like it is clearly understood to the audience that the short kilt is inappropriate and is meant to be funny.

Ah, thanks Jamie, and sorry about missing your post Hector. In all honesty, I'm not one for romantic comedies, but I might secretly rent this one just to see the Scottish parts.

I know it's meant to be comedy. What I was asking was if there was some plot reason. For example... the rental shop only had one size or if he measured himself wrong.

@georgeblack7: the reason is that Dempsey's character is not liked by one of the girl's maids of honor, and when they are all supposed to 'dress' for the highland games, this one girl gives him the mini skirt just for mean-ness.
