Ever since I moved here (NC) from Liverpool, I've had my correct place of birth guessed maybe twice. Almost everywhere I go I get asked whether I'm Scottish, Irish, Australian or even from New York City! . I gave up trying to explain ages ago and am tired of having to say "You know, where The Beatles were from" so now just answer 'Yes' to anyone who asks if I'm from a particular country. I guess that's going to confuse some people now that I'm going out kilted more and more -
"Hey, did you see that Scottish guy in the kilt over there?"
"You mean the Australian?"
"No, he told me he's Irish"

"Yeah, but he said he comes from where a particular McCartney came from..."
"Hmm. Strange guy!"
"Yeah, strange."

So you're wearing a Scottish garment to an English pub staffed and populated mostly by Hispanics and African Americans?
Is this a great country or what?

cool story.
i've found that when i've encountered someone of a different ethnicity i've gotten the best remarks of how great it is to show pride in my heritage and what-not.

I wonder if that's an appreciation of the rebellion against the homogenization of cultures that popular culture has come to represent... Resisting 'the norm' or reaching back to ancestral roots is an empowering thing, something I think minorities would appreciate more than the average caucasian (who is often perceived as being automatically empowered to a certain degree).
Or maybe I'm just full of it.
