Try to get over to Alexandria, Va. There's lots of Scottish heritage there, as the threads here will confirm. The "Old Towne" section is really charming, and it's pretty easy to get to from D.C.

I see that your senator has Scottish ancestry. Will you be wearing your kilt in the Capital? I see a Kilted Kapital headline in that.

If a meet is organized, please post it here. I've been looking for an excuse to get down there.

Congratulations. What a wonderful opportunity. When do you begin? We'll be in D.C. visiting our daughter the beginning of May.

I'm sure the Senator has already thought of this, but try to get a tour of the White House. Good on ya!

Theses are things I would say to visit before you leave:

The National Air and Space Museum (and the rest of the Smithsonian if you have the time)
    The Vietnam Memorial
    Arlington Cemetary
    The National Cathedral
    The Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials

You've already had some great suggestions for places to visit. Keep in mind that you will need to plan for several visits to take in all that the Smithsonian has to offer. I thought the Holocaust Museum was worth the visit. In Washington, there is plenty to inspire awe and reverence and wonder. But not everything in DC is stuck behind a rope or bullet-proof glass. Do try also to get out into some of the neighborhoods where people live. Take the Metro and feel the pulse. I love finding casual restaurants with sidewalk seating to take in the scene of people ambling by, meeting friends, then dashing off later for midnight haircuts.
At any moment you must be prepared to give up who you are today for who you could become tomorrow.

    My suggestions would be:
    1) Smithsonian
    2) Washington Memorial
    3) Lincoln Memorial
    4) Williamsburg/Yorktown (it's just down the river!)

I spent three great years in the Washington DC area, and still never managed to see everything, although I did see quite a bit and would love to go back. I am fortunate to still know many people in the area and will PM you their info. In addition, if you like beer and running you must check out these two running groups, I ran with them both and had a grand time DCH4 at http://www.qms-dc.com/dch4/dch4.htm
Just some of the friendly people you will find in the Washington DC Hash House Harriett’s and Harriers (DCH4)

You never know who might drop in.

The guy to my left was in the New Zealand Air Force and we were living at the same condo complex.

The three of us just ran down this large hill and NO beer.

That sounds like a great opportunity. One of those once-in-a-lifetime events. Make the most of it.

Congrats! What a great opportunity, Bishop! Good thing you didn't get an early ship date after all!

I've never been to DC, but the Marine!Goth has - when he calls next time, I'll ask him about the 'must see' list.
