OK. Brogues are far too expensive for me at this time. Usually, I wear a pair of black gym shoes with my kilt with regular black socks.
Get a decent pair of second-hand black wingtips from the thrift store, and some cheap hose from SportKilts. My shoes generally cost $6.00-$8.00. Regular dress socks look goofy with a kilt. While you're at the thrift store, get a decent Oxford shirt in a complementary color, and you're good to go.
I wanted to know what casual-type shoes look best with and/or without kilt hose.
My favorite kilt casuals are a second-hand pair of leather Timberlines. Without kilt hose, my favorites are Guinness flip-flops (in this "robust" economy, the only type of shoe I can afford to buy new any more, and that's from EBay).

If I'm not wearing hose during the warmer months then I'll wear my Birkenstock or my Chaco sandals. When wearing hose w/ garters then a pair of Vasque low top hikers or my Clarke shoes. Fly fishing is another story.

My personal taste is to wear boots, whether they be hiking, combat, motorcycle, or otherwise. I think this is because of the fact that they go up the ankle a bit, which works well with socks. If not wearing socks, I think sandals will work just fine, especially athletic sandals.
I couldn't say it any better! The above is true!

I haven't worn them yet, but I got a pair of Croc-style shoes to wear for the summer. They've been touted as comfortable and cool, so I'm looking forward to trying therm.
Has anybody worn these with their kilt?

In addition to the general comments above, I'd also state that only you (or your significant other) can really judge if you look 'good' or not. This is dependent on your style, size, and general disposition.
For me, as a larger guy, I look silly in bright solid colors. I also look silly in non-laced shoes with my kilt. As an example, I have a pair of Merrells slip-ons that I wear when it isn't too cold or snowy in the winter. They look fine with pants, silly with the kilt. I couldn't even tell you why, they just do. So, I have a nice dress shoe and something a bit more casual that are laced. I wear the former with flashes, the latter without. But pulled up hose with both. This look, however, doesn't work with my black utilikilt. go fig.
If the it isn't too hot, my hiking boots with scrunched hiking socks works with any of my kilts.
So, go to your local DSW or Payless, try on a variety of styles with your kilt and be honest with yourself about how you look. If you don't trust yourself with this awesome responsibility, take someone who you can trust. It is an traumatizing process (there may be blood), but you really shouldn't need to do it more then once in your lifetime. After the pain, you will know for sure what kind of shoe you like that looks good on you.
Good luck!

I wear black tennis shoes with my Utilikilt, and thats usually without hose. I wear dress shoes with hose with any of my tartans for a more dressy look, and boots with hose pushed down for a real casual look.

I will wear them around the house, or out to the store to pick something up, but I don't wear them "around town." They're comfortable, but fugly.
