Grats on the confidence. You will find that there are mainly three types of people you will encounter while in a kilt: 1. Those that don't pay any attention to it anymore than if you were wearing pants. 2. Those that cannot wait to compliment you and ask questions about it. 3. Children who cannot wait to embarrass their parents by yelling "Hey mommy/daddy! Why is that man wearing a skirt?"

The hands/pockets thing...yes! I usually have a hand in a pocket when I'm standing around talking with people at work and outside work. With the kilt, obviously that's not an option (well, with the kilt I have).
I think that adds some confidence boosting for me, though. I used to be a bad fidgeter, so hands in my pockets prevented that nervous habit. Not having pockets, it's forced me to have to realize that there's no reason to fidget and do things with my hands.
(Now, if I can only break the talking with my hands habit... )
Oh this is such an easy one...cross your arms as you gently spread your legs (just a tad mind you).
The stance of a kilted man with crossed arms in front of you is a sight to see, and it adds 500% to your confidence level.
It is a kickarse look, now if you want to go with a more subdued 'what to do with my hands' look, simply rest your hands on your sporran.
I'd rather go with the crossed arms though.

Or of course, there's always the option of an arm around your lass at your side!

Christo, the best thing is having a supporting wife. I remember my first non-celtic event wearing the kilt, we went out to get a quick lunch. I wore my kilt. My wife was HORRIFIED and embarassed the entire time. Nobody made a big deal of it but she was so distressed that I offered to go home and change afterward. (She agreed).
I don't understand why she doesn't like it but my wife is convinced that I am some sort of freak for enjoying kilts. I have even tried to show her pictures on Xmarks but she says "I don't wanna see any of that kilt ____!"
You have a wife that enjoys it, you are a lucky man.
