Hi and welcome from Utah.
There are a few tartans that are made to reflect on German heritage. http://kiltstore.net/tartan/German/5..._family_name=G and http://www.usakilts.com/registered_tartans.php
has pics of a few.
A kilt can be worn pretty much anytime, how much do you want to spend? A nice wool kilt can be over 400, less expensive ones start at about 40.
Nice wool kilts hold up great, but they are a bit spendy, and quite warm in warm climates.
I have a nice worsted wool for "careful" wear, and have a casual on order from USAK that will be for hiking, rafting, beer drinking, etc.

For daily wear, I would suggest one of the washable kilts, such as the ones sold by Sport Kilt. Pick one of the universal tartans you like the looks of, and then add as many bells and whistles as taste and pocket will allow. (I am assuming that you do not mean office type work. In that case something a bit more formal would be in order, USA Kilts would be my first stop). Remember, a tartan kilt is as formal, or informal as the rest of the ensemble makes it. Check out some of the threads as to what to wear with a kilt. All the way from the very formal (white tie+ of the Sheffmiur and Prince Charlie to a T-shirt, or even no shirt, pushed down sox and heavy soled boots.

There are a number of wonderful kilt makers out there, check some of the vendors on this site. Use the search function and you can find reviews on just about all of them. We're not shy on this forum...but rather than flame, we try to be very constructive in our reviews. You'll find we're a civil lot.
If you're not in the military, you might not want to wear a military tartan. There are those with strong opinions on that. However, I might wear a Navy and/or Air Force tartan to honor my father's service.
Other than that, go with what you're attracted to. There's hardly anything wrong with, I really liked this tartan.
If you're going to wear one camping/hiking, you might want to be sure you get something sturdy and washable.
I've found the answer to just about all my kilt questions using the search function, but don't let that stop you from posting and asking. Some answers may change over time.
Finally, from both southern US coasts!

Welcome to the rabble from West Texas. You'll find that a good kilt will be the most versatile garment you will ever own - as formal or informal as you want - depending on what you wear with it.

Welcome from just east of you in the highlands of North Carolina.
Sounds like you are the perfect candidate for a PV kilt. Polyester/viscose blend is washable, looks great, and is cool enough for central TN summers and warm enough for middle TN winters.
USA Kilts is a great place to start. Check out their casual line, and choose whatever tartan strikes your fancy...no one will be "upset".
Don't miss the "Casual" photos in the Pics forum to see a variety of "daywear" looks. Most folks stick to brown leather accessories for daytime / casual occasions.
And when you're ready for a "tank", Tennessee has a state tartan (and it's a great looking tartan, too). You'll only find it in wool, however.
Welcome to the addiction.
