Ted that all depends on the style of jacket you are talking about, for day wear then the bone or regular buttons would be fine, in fact that is what you'll find on a day wear tweed jacket. for more formal or evening wear then you would expect the black barathea wool Argyll with silver buttons.

Thank you McMurdo. I had just been looking at a post in this thread talking about using two different styles of waistcoat in combination with two colors of jackets... I was trying to get all the buttons to add up.

I guess someone needs to invent interchangeable buttons.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

Firstly, I don't have one. But if I did, I would get the vest just to be able to wear jacket and vest, OR vest alone, OR jacket alone. Gives you lots of options.

I think the waistcoat really adds something to the overall look, you are almost guaranteed of a dapper look with a waistcoat.

However from time to time without a waistcoat works as well,

Most of the jackets I have found came without the waistcoat but I always wear the waistcoat if the jacket came with it.

So a lot of different opinions here. But at least no one is threatening to kill me either way. :o) A lot of you say it depends on the weather- well, we live in Houston. "Nuff said. Also, this would be worn mainly at RSCDS balls.

I always wear it without a waistcoat but only because I don't have one to match the jacket. I prefer the look without one anyway for daytime wear.

As this would be for a ball I would say it all depends on the formality of the event, however I would think you would want to go with the waistcoat. For our RSCDS Ball earlier this year known as the Tartan Ball held at the Royal York I and most other attendants wore the Prince Charlie outfit here is a picture of me from that night.

Of course there was one gent in a Montrose Doublet and next year I will wear mine.

Oh, OK, so a vest makes it more formal. Then I'll get the vest and it can be used or not used as necessary. BTW, nice Montrose! I love those. You don't see them as much.
