I'm planning on grilling some bangers for dinner tonight. Most likely Bangers and Baked however instead of Mashed.

Thanks y'all, I couldn't imagine why they were called bangers, (except for one really rude possibility).

One note of distinction, thought... not all frying sausages are bangers.

Many English-style sausages are not all meat in a casing (like regular, supermarket grade breakfast sausages), but also contain a filling. Bangers, traditionally, are a mix of pork, bread crumbs, and pepper. The filler was used to reduce the amount of meat, thereby reducing the cost of making them. They were so popular as they were easily afforded by the working class.

They 'bang' (ie: split open) when the filler expands when cooking (the bread crumbs will absorb the fat from the pork, and some from the pan when cooking).

I have bangers and mash at least once a month... there's a great little meat shop a block away that sells them. It was one of the selling points when I met my girlfriend... she makes a mean onion gravy with hers!
