    Why not get them involved?

If there's several pipers too, why not organise a sponsored kilted car wash or the like for charity? Then you'll have plenty of opportunity to discuss the wearing of the kilt more regularly.

    Just a thought

I believe there is a fire fighters tartan. You might consider a kilt made from that as a bridge to your co-workers.

Again, here is where my wife is concerned about repercussions across the job, because firefighters gossip more than a bunch of people around the water cooler...they aren't happy unless they are griping and gossiping...so she worries for me and my reputation on the job, whereas I am of the opinion that practicing my pipes in the firehouse is a pretty good icebreaker all on its own.

Considering the universal use of pipers to show last respects to a fallen firefighter (or police officer) I can't imagine anyone making any objection or rude behavior to pipe practice at appropriate times. And the kilt is simply part of the package. I'm certain that firefighters would understand that.

I haven't seen kiltedfirepiper weigh in on this. You might send him a PM and get his insight. His screenname says it all.

Wearing a KILT in SPOKANE = NO SWEAT. Although I live in the Seattle area, I was raised in Spokane, & my Aunt & cousins all live there (+ we have our "family property just N.), as well as one of my closest friends.
I go there often. I stroll the streets, eat & drink, go to plays, attend the "Spokane Indian games etc. & except for the occasional A^7 (found every where), my experiences have been GREAT.

    KILT UP & enjoy.

the area I live in is a somewhat rural, farming and logging area north of Bellingham, Washington. I have worn my kilts around quite a bit, and so far have gotten only positive comments. I do get a few strange glances from some of those with different cultural backgrounds, but most people seem to be quite accepting.

That part of the state (actually, most of the western half of the state) offers much in the way of beautiful hikes that could be done kilted. I grew up out in the sticks here in WA, now that I'm living in the concrete jungle, I miss the days of walking out of my front door, taking a left, and being in thick forest.

Wear what you like and feel comfortable in! If that happens to be the kilt then great, if not that's okay too. Be your own person, do not care what others think! If you walk tall and proudly in your kilt, I find that others will perceive you as such as well. When you wear the kilt you have to walk into a situation as though you own the place. It works wonders! Happy kilting!

Remember that being confident and comfortable will carry you far. If you have to slide into kilt wearing slowly as was said prior, then when you are out and about becomes no big deal. Then soon enough you will discover the power of the kilt. Smile at people (especially the fairer sex) when you pass by and if you get the odd, few and far between, comment, let it roll off of you and keep your confidence.
