I use two clamp-style trouser hangers. First I fold the kilt into thirds as it would be worn, then in half again pleats out, making sure the aprons don't bunch up. A clamp hanger goes on each side catching just below the waistband. This method probably takes up too much room on the rod, but it works for me for now.

I use the two hanger option in a dust cover for storing at home, and a purpose made Kilt Carrier (with the kilt rolled up) for travelling:-

Use the Order of the Gael hangers for my hand sewn kilts and WalMarche' plastic with extra clips (5 total) for others.

Built home made hangers for my leather kilts, used a 2x2 and cup hooks then hang the leather belt loops from the cup hooks.
