Funny how people have contempt for politicians -- on the one side, but I suppose not on the other.
If you saw the revelations on the expense claims by UK politicans (of all parties) you would be seriously shocked.

We could buy up quite a few seal fur sporrans whilst they are still legal on their proceeds!

interesting. i smell a business opportunity.

my take: more seals = less fish; less fish = higher price for said fish, that i eat.

maybe i'll have to buy some sealskin sporrans and resell them in canada to pay for my fish. ;)

funny how everyone is so concerned about how the seals are killed and these things are still legal:

Probably because you couldn't get even one sporran out of a mouse pelt, even if it was a full mask with all four paws.

I don't get it. I have been told by several people that the overwhelming majority of seal skin sporrans come from seals that are farm-raised for their meat. So, it's not like seals are being clubbed for their skins. If sporrans weren't made from these farm-raised seals skins, they'd be disposed of -- wasted.

    Is that not accurate?

Actually it's not, seals culled in Canada are not wasted, there is a huge market for seal meat in the Far East. Sealing in Canada is heavily regulated. Seals skinned alive and the carcasses left on the ice are, thankfully, of a time long gone.

Wait, so I can go get a sealburger in Canada? Or do they only export it?

Go to Newfoundland, and enjoy the seal flipper pie.

IMHO, if seals weren't "cute and cuddly" the whole issue would be ignored, much like the killing of cattle.

Consider the poor Newfoundland people. Euro fishing has depleted the cod, the main livelyhood for Nfld. for ages. Then the seal hunt is threatened. So, a lot of Newfoundlanders head to the mainland to find work, many end up in my home town of Toronto, and you end up with the threat of a severe beer shortage! <joking>

Seriously, I don't hear the nuts at PETA screaming about the Cod. Hard to warm up to a cod. Seals are cuddly. Despite the fact they smell like cod.

    I'd proudly wear a well-made sealskin sporran.

I think they could give a nasty bite. I want to pet them but my better instincts tell me to stay a good distance away.
