How about a cluster of pheasant tail feathers instead of the tails? That way, you can see the rawhide work much better.

Feathers, tails and all other dangly things - I'd get rid of them. They only detract from the look of your good work. Then you have the problem of what happens when they get wet - they will never look as good again. Less is more.
