OT: Utah...
As the original poster deleted the message I thought it prudent to get rid of the quote as well, jokes about polygamy generally do not play well.
Polygamy has been illegal in Utah since the late 19th century. It was one of the major conditions for Utah statehood. While certain groups practice it illegally, it has become an unfair stereotype against LDS Church members that they continue to practice it.

Todd

Meanwhile, just down the road at Ogden's Ben Lomond High, young men are encouraged to wear the kilt if they so choose, this in recognition of Utah's pioneering ties to Scottish settlers.

Utah is great. It takes some of the heat off of the South.

Well, here in So. Cal, I teach every Friday kilted! My Principal has been nothing but supportive.
Sorry to hear that this Young Kiltie was taken to task by a numbskull.
Perhaps, the Principal's brains will come in soon.
Cheers,

The church where I work part-time has a day school with 500 students (pre-K through 8). Although my duties aren't directly with the school, I'm frequently seen on campus in my kilt.
A mother came up to me one morning and said that she was so glad to see me kilted. Her sixth grader has a kilt, which he has worn to special family occasions. She was happy to see the visible support on campus. (I suppose that it doesn't hurt that the Head of School is a man by the name of Hyslop. It also doesn't hurt that the church has a 25 year tradition of Kirkin 'o the Tartan.) It's been an education in cultural diversity, which the church and school support.

I am a school teacher in the same district of where this happened. I also live about 3 minutes away from the school that it happened at. I know some people have been pretty hard on the principla, I think it was just a stupid mistake. He apologized to the student and everything is cool with the student, his parents, and the school.
Another point I want to make is how brave this student was to wear this kilt to school. I know the demographics of this particular school. I can almost bet that most of the students never even heard of a kilt, let alone seen one. It took a lot of guts for this student to wear it to school. I plan on e-mailing the student and congratulating him.
Second point: I think the title of this post needs to be changed. Although the Associated Press titled that way, it is not a good description of the original intent of the article (not suprised the AP spinned this in a negative direction). The original title was:
Kilt creates a stir, then an educational opportunity.
I plan on laminating this article (I get the local newspaper that wrote the story) and putting it up on my door at school. Everyone will see it as they walk in.
