Sorry Freelancer , you won't be able to get that close, The Celtic Gypsy was lucky to get into the circle, normally only by special visits these days, The rope barrier is there to protect the stones from too much attention from visitors. As a child we were able to play on them, but I suspect that the protection of the stones is very important now. English Heritage( who look after the site) actually don't allow touching of the stones at all now, sadly

You're right paulhenry, the first time I was there, some years back, I was really bummed that the henge was restricted by that rope barrier (I'd been fascinated by, and looking forward to seeing the henge since I was a kid). So, I've arranged to hook-up with a tour that allows entrance among the stone circle after, or prior to the opening times. It cost a few extra quid, but this will be a thrilling experience for me they may not come again. Sometimes you just have to go for it!
