I always button it but at formal dinners I unbutton it when sitting down to preserve the line of my outfit then button it again when I stand.

For 3-piece suits, I leave the bottom button undone; and, for my kilt waistcoats, I button those.

Button it and generally leave it that way. Looks sloppy otherwise IMHO. But I have a long torso and therefore no issues with my outfit bunching up whilst sitting. More likely the gapping problem with my shirt color showing through when upright.

Interestingly I mostly leave my jacket totally unbuttoned for comfort, and only in relatively formal situations do I button all but the lowest button on the jacket.

Unbuttoned, as is the fashion in the States, but I too find it more comfortable when sitting.

    It depends on the vest/waiscoat

Those that are made such that the last button shouldn't be buttoned Ileave unbuttoned

Those whose lines look good with them buttoned I do

    Or is that too simple?

    Cheers

Ok so I have heard this before, and maybe I missed, but isn't there some kind of historical reason why some wear the bottom button undone?! or is it solely for comfort.
