That is to say, that if you are buying property in a known coal mining area there is a good chance that there is a coal mine under your property already over which you have no rights or say. So you buy the property - you own the lot - above and below ground.
Most detectorists, who operate within the law in England, come to an agreement with the land owner first - a kind of pre-nuptial agreement. Otherwise they stand to loose the lot. The organisation that guides detectorists has some down-loadable agreements on their website, just for that purpose.

Actually I am talking about first hand knowledge of treasure trove laws in England. As a land owner, in Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, and other parts of England, I have been fortunate to have had the occasional minor find on my land, usually as a chance find by a ploughman. So I really do know how the system works.Funilly enough the situation has never cropped up here in Scotland ,with me. So I cannot speak of Scottish law on that subject. Perhaps I should find out, as Bonnie Prince Charlie is supposed to have lost rather a lot of loot in this part of the world.
As to metal dectectors, I only allow them onto my land under strict conditions and any that are found on my land without permision are shown the gate, promptly!

Then you are proving my point.
In fact how it works, half the "reward" goes to the finder and half goes to the land owner
Where is the 50/50?

Finds Division Agreements
Be sure to agree terms with the landowner on finds division before you even think about detecting on their land, and get this agreement in writing. A finds division agreement could save you from a legal nightmare should you find a valuable item or hoard.
The vast majority of farmers and landowners are honest hardworking people who would never dream of trying to rip you off, but the sight of gold and silver can do strange things to people - it is better to have a finds division agreement and not need it than to need a finds division agreement and not have it.

I have no intention in getting into a deep conversation on treasure trove legal matters. What I can say is that on the four occasions that I have personal knowledge about, the "reward " was split half for the finder and half for the land owner, me. According to the news yesterday and I have no reason to doubt it, it was stated quite clearly many times that 50/50 was the split. So that is where 50/50 comes from.

I'm glad everyone enjoyed it
& thank you to NewGuise for the addition of the photo link.
I haven't had much time as of late to be on-line, but when I saw this story I knew there'd be more than a few (like myself) who'd like to know about it

Again I see why one of the oldest professions is "Judge".
Disclaimer:
My pre-retirement profession was in (USA State) government (Civil Service) administration.
I declined an opportunity to serve as an (Administrative Law) judge.
I had no problem in evaluating evidence or in making findings of fact or findings of law.
But I lack the (necessary) patience to dispassionately uphold or deny assertions and contentions.
I’m never surprised when judges appear irritated. That’s the way I’d have been.

I love the knotwork and beast images. Nearly identical to Scandinavian art from that time on up to the 13th century.

If these pieces are trophies of war, who's to say that they're not of Scandinavian manufacture.
