Some 40 years ago I used to go hiking in the Pennines, and always took three pairs of thin cotton socks with me - man made is not an option as my skin reacts to it.
Stopping to change sock liners kept my feet in good shape and I have hose from that time still in good condition too, so the idea seems to be sound.
If you have white hose and want to soften the colour, try dipping them in tea. Use weak tea and a short dip, and repeat until they are dark enough not to show. Overdoing the colour is not easy to reverse, so it is advisable to go carefully.
