when it comes to things even the english are wary of taking in .... ill leave the marmite ... which cannot be described in the realm of taste. gimme a gallon o scrumpy and back awee slowly

I have very sensitive taste buds, but age had reduced them, however, I washed my hands this morning in a perfumed soap and I can still smell it, and taste it on my skin after several washes with plain stuff.
I can now eat Marmite.
The ideal way is to take a loaf of home made bread and cut two slices as thick as will fit into the toaster.
A grill dries out the bread more, and the idea is to make the toast just lightly but definitely tanned.
Depending on your toaster, you might need to cook it twice, turning the slices over so that the top edge gets crisped too.
Put your plate under the grill to warm it. Don't overdo it.
Whilst the bread is toasting take a generous amount of unsalted butter and mix in a smigin* of Marmite - you might have to warm the knife to do this, but the toast will be all the better for not having cold butter mashed into it.
When the toast is made, place it on the warmed plate and spread on the Marmite and butter. Cover, don't smother.
Wait long enough for the butter to look melted, then eat.
*A smigin is the amount of Marmite required to make eating two thick slices of toast just very slightly dangerous, but no more.

No, it is certainly not. 
I was visiting Aussie friends one weekend and had Vegemite on my toast at the morning. OMG! It was shocking.
Since I've been told (and it's been echoed here) that Marmite is even STRONGER I've prudently stayed away from it. To me it tastes like it was exuded from a pit underneath a machine shop.

Oh no its not, Marmite is far better than Vegemite.
Never ever taste Marmite on it own! Spread thinly on toast with REAL butter is the way to go.
I don't use marg or butter (to lazy to get another container out) and have the MM nice and thick on my toast, puts hairs on everything for you, and gives you x ray vision...
A thin layer on a toasted cheese sandwich (before toasting)
Second that, was brought up on marmite and cheese sandwiches for snacks, but if you put the MM and cheese on toast, then grill it, its Owesome...

The Marmite Cheddar is quite tasty.. It sells out quickly at the local grocery here in Boston.
Funny thing is that Albertson's a U.K. grocer doesn't sell Marmite, or the Marmite Cheddar here. But the local company Roche Brothers has more U.K. and Irish Goods. Go figure.

Well i can't let this chatter go on much longer without singing the praise for Vegemite.
I grew up on the stuff, cheese and vegemite sandwiches, vegemite on toast, vegemite off a spoon, got to love eating a by product from the brewing process of one of our best beers in South Australia. Coopers beers are home grown and home brewed. Some of the yeast comes from the coopers brewery.
Have Vegemite on toast with a cold Coopers Pale ale, now that is heaven right there.
It might not be to everyones liking, but either is peanut butter and JAM......

So here we go again - the great, everlasting Australia/New Zealand debate - Is Marmite better than Vegemite? I grew up on New Zealand Marmite - not quite the same as the UK product. See this Wikipedia article for the difference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marmite

After spreading my toast with REAL butter, I simply show it the jar of Marmite, or possibly a picture of a jar of Marmite and that's just about the right amount!
Seriously a little goes a long way!
I used a similar approach with vermouth in my extra dry martinis back in my drinking days...
