There is also the possibility that it is indeed the same sporran, but that the tassels were shortened to modernize the appearance of an heirloom.

I am leaning toward the belief that the two princes are wearing the same sporran in any case. The rivets are in the exact same positions, with the exact same irregularities in pattern. If one is a copy of the other, the forger had an insane sense of detail.

I'm glad you were able to get so much use out of your sporran, Tiny. This thread brings back memories, and the forum has changed a bit over such a short time.

and now I remember where that "If it's not Scottish..." quote came from
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

    Tiny,
I'm pleased your 'value priced' sporran purchase has worked out for you. It's good to find a product that is inexpensive (compared to what else is out there) and still fulfills your needs and wants. Most of the negative commentators in the start of this thread have been banned, you'll note. I doubt you'll find much of that attitude now, should you purchase another similar sporran

Pity about the rivet, but if you go to your local DIY store, you can get a rivet gun for about $10 and re-set a rivet in the missing one's place.

I didn't get so lucky with my starter. Right out of the box I replaced the tassels, and shortly after it's first wear, the cheap, thin split they used as a gusset started to crack. It's what pushed me into making my own.

I think the start of "If it's no' Scottish.." was Mike Meyers on SNL. He ran a small store of Scottish goods and would always chase the customers out to cries of "If it's no' Scottish" when they asked for things like shamrocks and leprechauns. Good times...

Ya, for a few days I had "I'm not Scottish, I'm..." in my signature. It just kind of rubbed me the wrong way.

Well, when asked the inevitable question whilst wearing the kilt (no, not the one about pants, the OTHER one ) I always answer, "I'm as Scottish as Prince Albert" (since I'm nearly 100% German). I usually am the recipient of a blank stare, since most people have no grasp of history. Sometimes I get a polite nod and smile, which is basically the same thing. Rarer still is a small chuckle.

I read through from the beginning and was wondering what the reason was, for the resurrection ...

The only issue I now find myself with is the other day I caught it on the edge of a counter at work and heard a pop. one of the rivits on the back, that help hold the sporran strap loop on, pulled through the leather. Now the sporran hangs a lil crooked but not terrible.
It's good to know that these types of sporrans will hold up to non-abusive daily wear. In all likelihood, it is a "leather" sporran, not a leather sporran...if it's anything like the one I got for 20$ as a starter sporran, it feels a bit like cardboard, and does not flex like leather, rather it bows like a piece of plastic. It is made of leather, but rather than being a piece of hide, it is leather particulates harvested from various processes of leatherworking, held together in a matrix of some sort (epoxy, etc)...similar to particle board. It's weaker than a piece of hide, which you found when the rivet pulled through. In a recent email conversation with a craftsman, he mentioned he's repaired a few of these sporrans, and that they do not damage the same way as leather...the one he was referring to had cracked along a line of stitching, it sounded from the description that it was similar to what happens when tearing heavily perforated cardstock.

I'd say for a cheap sporran I got some good use out of it as I wore this sporran everyday since it arrived. I just won an auction on eBay for a black and white cow hide sporran which should show up soon. I'll be saving a few more coins and investing in a Buzz Kidder soon but I think I'll stick with my cheap SWK sporran for at work.
I'd say so too, and congratulations on your new purchase! I hung mine up, once I had the money to afford a real hide sporran...who knows, someone might need to borrow a sporran. That in mind, the real thing cost me under a hundred bucks, and it's beautiful.

I probably would have gone down the same road, if I didn't have other pursuits that take up a lot of time. From the photos, it looks enticingly difficult.

By the way, the most noticeable difference between the "leather" sporran I purchased first, and the leather sporran I got later, is the quality of the gusset. It's like comparing velvet to cardboard.

"I'm as Scottish as Prince Albert"...classic!

"If it isn't Scottish, it's crrrrrrrrap!!!!"
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but why does your post sound like an advertisement, complete with links to the store?

In regards to your follow-up comment about traditional Scottish sporran makers going out of business, thats how business works. The customer decides a reasonable price for what they want and they'll choose whomever fits -- and if the company wants to stay in business, they either try harder to innovate, find ways to lower their cost, or form some sort of business monopoly. If they don't, or choose not to try any of that then the market swallows them up.

As he said, he spent $23 and got it reasonably quickly (besides the email mix-up). Right now is not the ideal time to be spending $230 or even $150 on sporrans FOR MOST people, and if people can afford those prices, that's great for them that they are somehow unaffected by the economy.

Your post seems not like an insult to the company he shopped at, but more of an insult to the poster. Personally I'd take the $23 sporran and save $200. My great great grandson can get his own sporran.
