ALSO at the risk of sounding like a geek. The eagle idea never would have worked, for two reasons. The eagles were a neutral party who would not get involved in the war. Second, the ever vigilant eye of Sauron would have seen the eagles coming before they even reached the realms of his land. Surely the only way to destroy the ring was through secrecy, in a fashion the dark lord could never suspect!

Alright, alright! I acquiesce That actually makes me feel better about spending the time watching the movie. But really, my favorite parts are the wars at Gondor and Helms Deep and Isengard. Frodo is difficult to watch after a while

I hope it's not one of those rings that magically changes your finger from tan to green. It looks nice!

What's funny is that for our 10th wedding anniversary, my wife and I got matching "posey" rings in (Irish) Gaelic that say "le mo ghrása mise agus liomsa mo ghrá". When people comment on them, they always ask if they are from Lord of the Rings.

So you're the one who has my ring.
Don't be surprised when these nine guys all dressed in black come to visit you.

"I cannot make out the words," said Frito.
"No, you cannot," said Goodgulf. "They are Elvish, in the tongue of Fordor. A rough translation is:
"This ring, no other, is made by the elves,
Who'd pawn their own mother to grab it themselves.
Ruler of creeper, mortal and scallop,
This is a sleeper that packs quite a whallop.
The Power almighty rests in this Lone Ring.
The Power, alrighty, for doing your own thing.
If broken or busted, it cannot be remade
If found, send to Sorhed (the postage is prepaid)."
Bored Of The Rings, anyone?

OK I will admit I'm a major geek and my wife knew that she would be dragged to the movies. In cases like this my wife will read the novels to know what is going on. She worked her way through them and came up to me and said -
"I can sum up this epic series in four sentences:"
They came. They sang. He tripped. They won.
"Are you telling me this epic clash between good and evil was won because the bad guy tripped."
I was at first horrified that she would dismiss one of the greatest works I had read but the more I though about it the more I needed a drink.
