If you are not concerned that about having leather, the Stillwater nylon cargo sporran is great. The main section opens through a zipper on top, no flap to deal with. It has another section with a flap, and there is a zipper pocket in the flap where business cards/ credit cards fit. Very practical, but just that it's not leather. I love it for general casual use. The link below will take you to it.

The Buzz Kidder's magnetic deal is my favorite. Not only are they able to carry a ton of stuff, they are easy to access and basically close themselves.
The only downside is that whenever I run a "non Buzz" sporran that actually has to be manually closed, I tend run around with it hanging open!
Edit; I'll agree with Santa Wally about Stillwater's 'cargo sporran ' I was lucky enough to get one of the limited run of black leather versions. And while I don't use it much other than for casual wear, it's zippers and compartments make it the most practical of any sporrans I have.

Speaking of male/female on the closure, what I really like best of all is where the flap has a metal-reinforced female side (basically a squared-shape grommet) and the body of the sporran has a male side that's rectangular. The flap closes over the male side and you twist it 90 degrees to lock it in place. That's a good positive connection.

Have you taken a look at a Thorfinn sporran? Pockets for anything you want to carry, hooks for your keys. Essentially, you design it.
The closure on mine uses laces to adjust the sides and to secure the flap, and I have found this to be very convenient.
I'd venture to say that the Thorfinn is among the best sporrans available. The workmanship is superb, it is big enough that I can get my gloms into it, and it doesn't have any annoying tassels to get tangled or caught on anything or furry bits that get matted or shed. But of course, if you like any of those things, you can order them too.
EPITAPH: Decades from now, no one will know what my bank balance looked like, it won't matter to anyone what kind of car I drove, nor will anyone care what sort of house I lived in. But the world will be a different place, because I did something so mind bafflingly eccentric that my ruins have become a tourist attraction.

Magnetic Clasps are best.
I don't like the snap closures at all. As Ted mentioned, you have to get it lined up exactly, then press firmly and you are never quite sure if it catches.
When I started making my own sporrans, I went with magnetic catches. They close easily when properly aligned in the making, and I've never had one fail under normal circumstances. Even if it would come open, the larger flap I use (because I decorate the front flap) usually keeps things inside.
Only problem I've heard from those who have one of mine is the male part on the inside of the front flap comes loose. I'm looking for a better cement.
I've also put some "turn lock" clasps on some sporrans. These are more secure initially, but they can fall apart, I'm afraid, so I don't normally use them unless someone asks.
Anyway, my vote is for magnetic clasps.

Yes I'm looking at Turpin's excellence, but the strap and button closures still look a bit fiddly to me, for that money the art of Donnie's leather work is very attractive, Donnie also uses cigar box closures which look easy to manage, and for that money I could outfit my accessories completely and I think my wife might lynch me for buying a $125 purse. She confessed to me today that she has never paid more than $35 for a handbag. She also told me she doesn't like the look of Rob Roy sporrans. Believe me when I say that I do what I like, but I also trust her judgement some and let's face facts. I am trying to please her eye a little too. And other eyes while I'm at it. The functionality of the pocket's in Turpin's sporrans is nice though.

Time to sack up, buttercup...open the flap, grab what you need, and close it. If you've got so much stuff in there that you can't find what you need, then you've got too much stuff in there!
FReally, stop overthinking it!

Just replace the snap with a magnetic catch. They aren't really pricey, and the hardest part for me was getting the riveted snap out. Check with a tailor or even a tack shop and they probably have a simple trick for it. I wound up having to drill mine. I'm still surprised the sporran was unscathed when it was done!
Or just carry a few bucks and ID in you hose and leave everything else at home?

Piper's pocket seems so smart to me. A lot of their sporrans are purely ornamental with no storage at all!
