I have a dozen or so silk squares in various patterns and solids colors, but I lean toward either a solid or polka dot for jackets. In a dark suit or blazer, it's a solid navy or black or maroon. Nothing flashy, really.

For black tie, it's a white silk although I have experimented with a black silk that looked good. White tie would probably be white silk, too, although I only see that type outing every year or two, and then it's in a Montrose doublet without pocket. I wouldn't mind a regulation doublet with a white silk, tough.

I always carry a cotton handerchief in my hip pocket (when in a suit) or my sporran (when kilted) for practical usage, so the silks aren't soiled. Occassionally, I do use one of the new, unused white or pale blue cotton handkerchiefs on the pocket for a change.

The PCs I have seen and my own Holyrood/Brian Boru happen to be sans outer breast pocket, so aren't exactly amenable to a pocket square. Found that out the hard way after shopping around for one to match my wife's dress for our outing this past weekend, then trying to put it in the non-existent pocket. Not personally sure which other levels of Highland formalwear possess breast pockets.

I tend to wear silk, solid coloured pocket squares with my Highland day wear - and I typically stuff them. I purchase mine from Brooks Brothers.
