Well, since I haven't heard from you on this, I'm going to go ahead with the project, altering the tooling patterns, but keeping the tack patterns. That way, mine will be historically accurate, not reproductions, but inspired by these pieces.

I think that would be fine. Here's some more information about the originals - www.scottishtartans.co.uk/Targe_Info.pdf

Thank you! This should be an interesting project. I think I may scale it down from 21 inches to 18, though. I'll be carrying this at festivals and other events, and 18 inches is a more manageable size.

Make it 19". That seems to be the most common dimension listed for original targes. The two I made are that size, and carrying them is no problem....

I've been looking in my "Swords and the Sorrows" book. 12 original targes are displayed therein. They range in diameter as follows:

    19" - 8 targes
    20" - 2
    21" - 1
    24" - 1

Measure from your elbow to your outstretched finger tips, and you'll see where this came from. A cubit, basically! The guy with the 24" targe must have been a big fellow (or wanted extra protection!)....

Thank you, sir! I decided that instead of using red cloth for the back, I'm going to use deer hide. Tandy had a helluva sale, so I got 22 feet for $68!! That's a STEAL, man! It's gonna be lovely!!

Yes they do!! Those are beautiful!! But why buy from someone else when I can make my own? Thanks for that link- I'll be borrowing some ideas from them in the future, I'm sure.
