We have a second-generation ice cream maker in town whose concoctions are second to none. For a few weeks every spring he makes Guinness ice cream. It's delicious, cooling and meant for fun, but he'd be the first to tell you, it's no substitute for the real deal.

A lovely tradition of one of Toronto's regiments is a huge silver punch bowl brimming with what they call Black and Tan - half Guinness and half Champagne - served in the Officer's Mess every New Year's Day. I'm sure they don't use expensive Champagne, but as a drink it is terrific.

I have never heard of a Black and Tan that used champagne.

Interesting page on the "drinking temps" of various beers (I love the "Any beer you don’t actually want to taste" stage!).

That's very interesting. You know here in Arizona, a beer can go from the "very cold" category to the "hot" category, by simply removing it from the fridge, opening it, and carrying it outside to drink it (at least during 8-9 months of the year).

Down at the Flying Saucer in San Antonio we used to pay the waitresses to go to the ice cream shop next door and make us beer floats. Guinness is adequate for this purpose, but I found Young's Double Chocolate Stout to be a much better mix.

Had some Guinness ice cream on St Pats day just past, not a fan.

Isn't a "Black Velvet" Guinness with a bubbly mix? I think you can use cider or champagne.

    Lightbulb

Yes, half Guinness and half Champagne is a 'Black Velvet'. (although I've seen folks use cider)
A 'Black and Tan' is Guinness and Bass ale. - Use Harp Lager instead of Bass, and it's a 'Half and Half'.
Lately, Guinness have been promoting an 'All-Irish Black & Tan' made with Smithwick's Ale.

I think I stand corrected Zardoz - it has been awhile. Black Velvet seems to be what it was called. Good too, if expensive when you're filling a big punch bowl.

Thanks for the lesson on mixed beer drinks ... I've never been a fan of b&t but I love smithwicks ... I may have to try that one.
