Be *very* careful with mothballs; they are toxic to people and pets as well as to moths.

My mother also had mothballs everywhere. They also leave your clothes smelling of mothballs. Cedar oil looks best idea. Also I have heard that cedar wood loses its effectiveness after a few years so re-coating in cedar oil would help.

Cedar can also be freshened by light sanding. When it smells like cedar again, it's good for use.

About the cause of the problem: can we agree that it was not so much being regimental as a lack of due diligence in keeping the kilts clean?
I hope that in the cases where the damage is confined to the inner apron it may be possible to patch the damage and trust the outer apron to conceal it. If the damage is where it can't be concealed, however, I fear the kilt is ruined. Maybe something else can be made of the material; that's an ancient and honored Scots' custom (with high survival value).

Those damaged kilt pictures are offensive! This thread should be flagged...
Just kidding, the moths should be flagged instead!

Hmmm. Based solely on the pictures, this might be a good time to divert the thread (no pun intended) or start a new one. It is not a topic I've seen discussed and others might find it interesting.
Kiltmakers of X-marks: can these kilts be repaired to any degree of acceptability or are they now expensive dustrags? Repaired perhaps not "as new", but usable for casual or street wear?
Steve? Rocky? Barb? Others? -- Your thoughts please.

Moths love wool - but they like dirty wool more, and they hate the light, so they lay their eggs in the darkest and most undisturbed parts. The centre line is their most likely target on anything.
That level of damage also takes time to do - woollen items should be put away clean, either in something moths cannot access - a freezer is a good place, or in a sealed protective cover of some kind, and not left in the open air unless regularly - at least once every week - disturbed, brought out into the light, shaken and inspected.
Worse than moths though are carpet beetles. I hate carpet beetles.

As you can imagine after this discovery we are very "moth-conscious" and all our wardrobes now have moth-killers installed. Here is a site with lots of information and I see they have a US site as well - http://www.mothcontroldirect.co.uk/index.html - it really doesn't do to be complacent about the little b*****s as my experience has shown. By the way I didn't do the pleat damage justice - just too horrible to show on a site like this - suffice it to say that you can easily put a fist through the holes there!
OK folks, you said you were ready for this. Here are the pleat shots like you’ve never seen pleat shots before (and hopefully never will again) –
