The 7/8 inch size makes a great garter. Just cut the ends in a swallowtail and you're good to go.
Excuse my ignorance but can you explain your method for "cut the ends in a swallowtail" Thanks. This sounds like a viable idea. Perhaps there is something in weaving ala the style from House of Cheviot that I do not understand, and I will be the first to admit it, but they seem expensive.

Sorry I don't know how to post a link to another thread. I've copied from a different thread (see below) that makes reference to Arlen's thread. It is in the DIY Showroom section. Perhaps someone else can post the direct link. After reading Arlen's thread, my wife started make garter ties for me. She has enjoyed making them and has made several pair for me. An inexpensive ways to go.

These garters are dead easy to start with, it's all knitting back and forth. I'm using a worsted weight yarn (same as I use for hose) which means the strand of yarn is made up of 4 threads (vs. 2 threads for what is sometimes called "sport weight"). First pair I did 10 stitches wide but they are just a bit too wide so this pair is 8 stitches wide. All credit to Arlen's thread for getting me started!

After cutting to length, make two more cuts meeting in the middle, giving a < sort of shape, so that they look like this:

    Did I miss the answer?

I don't think I understood whether the garter stitch garters or the stockinette stitch garters held better or were most comfortable.

The advantage for me would be that the stockinette can be done on a machine.
