Re: Yellow tourie preferred?
At our clan meet, most wore black touries.
Dr. Hamish McLaren, the clan society chairman in the centre.
I have seen blue, red and black but not yellow.

Perhaps we should begin a thread showing photos of the Duke of Argyll in Highland dress - are their as many 'out there' as in the Duke of Rothesay's case?
Hmmm...

Re: Yellow tourie preferred?
My glengarry has a blue tourie, but that is because I switched it out with teh red one that came on it.
When I first bought it, as a hat of some type was required for the color guard, I had been told that diced was for the military and plain was for civilians. So I bought a plain one. At the same vendor they had a few different colors of touries, and I bought a nice light blue one. My thoughts at the time were that blue and white were the main colors of the society and that my tartan had no red in it but lots of blue and I thought it would just look nicer.
So I took it home and removed the red one and added the blue one. The first time I wore it, I was in for many comments on where did I get it, but not because folks liked it. I was told by several that I had done some terrible mutilation to my glengarry by removing the red tourie. I did not understand how this could be if the same vendor sold the blue ones. After reading this thread many years later, I am glad to say that I still don't get it and am glad I chose to keep the blue one.

Re: Yellow tourie preferred?
I was looking for His Grace the Duke's photo when I was called awa' and Kyle beat me to it. Good show, Kyle. thanks.
AS to the yellow toorie: do as you like. Seems a bit too bright for my tastes, but then when I first heard about the pink hose, I was aghast as well . . . until I saw them quite some time back.

P.S. The effortless appearance is never pulled off by anyone as it was by the late Lord Lovat. Lord that guy looked good in anything!

I suspect this "favorite color" bit may actually refer to the Gaels' preference, up into at least the 1600s if I recall correctly, for saffron-dyed leines/shirts. That shade of yellow does seem to have been something they were fond of.

Re: Yellow tourie preferred?
The red/yellow waistcoat choice doesn't seem to have stood the test of time - English gents have been putting on yellow waistcoats with their sports coat and flannels as casual country attire for a long while now.

We are living in different times now, but in the not so distant past, "gentlemen" did not wear red waistcoats(civilian wear) because they did not want to be mistaken for "staff". I think there was a lot of truth in that.
Also a yellow waistcoat was, and still is, worn with your hunting(horses and hounds) attire, so a versatile piece of kit for the country set.
