Re: Assaulting my kilt
Amazing pics!
The VALUE, from a fair price for craftsmanship is why I just ordered my 27th USA Kilt....okay...that and kilt addiction...but the quality is solid.
I don't give my kilts the workout you do - but found the Teflon an gift after getting pitch on a kilt while hiking in the forest. The Teflon allowed me to remove the pitch with the tried and true bacon grease remedy, then the kilt washed up just fine with no trace of the pitch.
The best way to swim with a kilt is to leave the kilt at the shore and swim as God intended man to swim.

Re: Assaulting my kilt
Tyler: My wife, Mary, and her girlfriends spend waaay to much time in Whole Foods, Sunflower, Trader Joe's etc. I'm more of a Safeway/Kroger "Where's the beer aisle and meat counter?", 15-items-or-less kind of guy. And, since Standard raised the subject, Mary is forever scolding me about ripping the Velcro.
I know just what you mean about drooping eyelids and nodding off. Mary picks most of our films, so we spend a lot of time watching graphic, violent, Gothic action/adventure movies like Pride & Prejudice, Persuasion, Jane Eyre, and Sense & Sensibility. I wear the kilts, so you know who wears the pants in our family.
Until you mentioned direction I did not notice that you live in Lakewood about 250 miles north of us. My old college roommate lives in Evergreen and used to work in Lakewood. We're almost neighbors! Have you been to the games in Estes Park (I think)?
I am going to twist Mary's arm tonight and get her to administer a couple of blind tests on me - one on two Port-finished malts and another on AnCnoc 12 & 16. In doing so, I will raise a glass to the north and toast you and yours. Slainte agus sonas!

Re: Assaulting my kilt
Are you kidding me? Estes Park has got to be one of the most beautiful Highland Games venues in the world! Longs Peak Highland Games....
Al Stagner, several-times 50-59 world champion is in Colorado. So is Johnnie Stone
Here's the Athletics page on the Longs Peak HG website...

I would suggest joining up at NASGA...http://www.nasgaweb.com and putting up a thread that you want to find someone to train with. You never know!

Re: Assaulting my kilt
Alan: Thanks for the encouragement and the links. I have attended games in northern CA, eg Pleasanton, but not those in CO.
I have been in Estes Park (and, of course RMNP) several times. Mary and I even climbed (ie walked up, mostly) Long's Peak, but that was many years ago.
My idea of games participation these days is the scone put at breakfast and tossing the caper at dinner. I trained with Hector MacDonald, until he blew himself up.

Re: Assaulting my kilt
For Heavy Athletics I was always a Sportkilt/Stillwater guy. Found very early on however that a Stillwater standard was too bulky around the waist to wear whilst trowing cabers etc. Their economy kilt, although not tapered in anyway really, was a decent option. But they still develop snags.
Sportkilts are good for about a year's worth of competition before they just look like a towel wrapped around me and the stitching in the 'pleats' tear. Hey, I'm tough on kilts that I wear in competition. Some of our games have gone to multiple rounds of cabers; one festival had us throwing four rounds; and some are 2 day events.
I decided to check out a USA off-the-rack casual kilt that was close enough to my size, just to give it a whirl. Sturdy, crisp, takes a beating and still looks new after throwing in it 4-5 times. The price is great, especially when one figures the normal replacement costs of my Sportklits
My next throwing kilts will be all USA kilts, but this time cut to my measurements.

Well, this thread has broken down my resistance, which was feeble to begin with. Just pulled the trigger on a USAK Casual in Davidson. I have a few things coming up I'd rather not subject my good wool Davidson to, but I'd still like to represent.
