Re: Pipers' dress v Highland Dress
Former personal piper to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, P/M Jim Motherwell - note the Lovat green hose with the Balmoral tartan - of course, Lovat green kilt hose have been a Regimental standard for many years. I like the full-mask badger sporran too, and since P/M Motherwell is an Argyll, it makes perfect sense.

Excellent photo of P/M Willie Ross, who was personal piper to Her Majesty, Queen Victoria. Note the use of day ('blanket') plaid, which was very popular throughout the 19th-century, and can still be seen in use today (I wear a day plaid for certain events, as well).

19-century watercolour portrait of P/M Willie Ross (obviously P/M Ross is quite younger in the portrait) by Kenneth MacLeay, RSA. It's interesting to see the photograph and painting of the same sitter, together. MacLeay captured Ross' likeness with superb accuracy - it's almost eerie.

Cheers,

Here is a link listing all the Monarchs pipers from Angus MacKay in 1843 to today with some history of the position.
