Re: DIY attempt number 5
Every time I log in, I make sure to check this thread, because I really dig this tartan, and am waiting to see it finished. I'm thinking my next kilt will be a casual from USAK in these colors, but I want to see it finished before I go ahead.
Just out of curiosity, did you try pleating to any of the strips before deciding to go with the sett? I'm wondering if pleating to the yellow strip would make it too loud out back.
Outstanding job on this so far. Looking back through your previous efforts, I'd say your skill with a needle and thread are coming along nicely, and I don't think you were very bad to begin with. (a heluva lot better than my first... and second... and third. )
Keep up the good work!
Looking forward to the rest, -Steve

Re: DIY attempt number 5
I have two separate pieces of this tartan. The other one has a selvedge. I plan to try my first military box pleat with that piece. It will be pleated to the double yellow stripe on black. It doesn't look too loud at all. Check out pics of it pleated this way in this thread: http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...al-kilt-66715/
There are fewer, wider pleats but to get an idea of more, narrower pleats check out this recent thread: http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...st-kilt-71080/
It's the Ramsay tartan. The Oakleigh is just the Ramsay with the white stripes substituted with yellow.
Thanks for the kind words. I'm not sure of the yardage of the USAK casual. I tend to like more, narrow pleats when pleating to the stripe. You really can't go wrong ordering from Rocky but why not just buy some yardage and give it a go yourself?
I'll post more pics when I get the pleats basted.

Re: DIY attempt number 5
I checked out the links you put up and now I'm really jazzed about this tartan. I don't know why I was suspicious of what it would look like pleated that way, but now that I've seen it, I think it looks great!
I was just thinking about going and seeing what Joann's offerings were like. I haven't taken a shot at tartan yet. So far, my efforts have been of the x-kilt variety.
First things first though, I think the wise thing for me to do would be to get a copy of TAoK. Of course, that'll have to wait until tax season, as that's where all my fun money for the year comes from.

The book and Marton Mills PV. Those are my suggestions. If it comes out miserably, you aren't out that much money. If it comes out superb, all the better. ;) You can do it.

Luckily, I only cut once. I hope to finish the fringe soon and get the waistband on, and maybe even get it pressed tonight. Maybe that is asking too much of myself.

I just finished pressing it. One of the stripes in the waistband was off by a few threads but it's nothing a belt can't fix. I'll try to get some more pictures. I may wait until the buckles are done.
