Doh! I was thinking of hackles when I wrote cockade. That'll teach me to post on six hours of sleep.
I included the link to Lyon's page because it was a convenient reference. I realize he has no legal authority on the wearing of feathers.
Sorry to veer the thread off-topic.
It's a nice look Harold. Well done.

John thanks for the link. I am now more informed. As I now understand it, the wearing of feathers is at the discretion or gift of the Clan Chief, with the exception sub Clan chiefs that can wear two feathers and the Armiger one or if you are the Chiefs representative outwith Scotland.
Friends stay in touch on FB simon Taylor-dando

In an article by the then Campbell of Airds, Unicorn Pursuviant, stated that Society chiefs, presidents, convenors, etc., can wear two feathers for their positions are like that of a chieftain, and other society national officers may wear one feather. As stated by Harold, the feathers go with the office, not the individual as far as societies go. In Scotland the feathers should be eagle feathers, but in the US one will get arrested if possessing a real feather. Only certain Native Americans are entitled to such.

This is totally at the discretion of the chief of the clan. Unless specifically authorized by the chief to wear feathers, clan officers should not take it upon themselves to do so.
